Todd Phillips (born April 21, 1953, in San Jose, California) is a highly respected American acoustic double bassist (and occasional mandolinist) known for bringing a more melodic, interactive approach to bluegrass bass. A founding member of the original David Grisman Quintet, he became a first-call player across the acoustic world, blending bluegrass drive with jazz-informed musicality, and earning a reputation for pushing the bass beyond simple root–fifth patterns. Phillips is best known in bluegrass circles as the bassist for The Bluegrass Album Band, where his rock-solid time and tasteful note choices helped define the group’s benchmark sound. He also spent key years with The Tony Rice Unit, and his broader career includes work as a producer/composer and a two-time Grammy winner, with credits spanning many of the genre’s most influential artists and projects.
