Billy Strings

“Billy Strings” as a performing band is the five-piece touring ensemble led by guitarist and vocalist Billy Strings (William Lee Apostol), backed by Jarrod Walker (mandolin), Billy Failing (banjo), Royal Masat (upright bass), and Alex Hargreaves (fiddle). Together, the group is known for a modern bluegrass sound built on traditional instrumentation, tight ensemble interplay, and extended improvisation in live performance. 1

The lineup evolved from an earlier quartet into a five-piece when fiddler Alex Hargreaves became a permanent member in July 2022, solidifying the band’s current configuration. The same core band is also credited in official album materials for Highway Prayers, where the site lists Strings with Failing, Masat, Walker, and Hargreaves as the longtime band featured on the record. 2
